West
Point has turned out more leaders than Harvard Business
School.
West Point
Leaders learn to meet these high performance standards:
1.
How to build a committed workforce that will
overcome any obstacle and get the job done
2.
How to make the most of each individual’s talents
3.
How to thrive on danger (as opposed to stress)
4.
How to use role-playing to prepare for crises
5.
How to turn silence into as powerful inspiration
as speech
6.
How to foster competition and cooperation to
raise a group’s energy level
Business leaders in China will have a precious
opportunity to learn how West Point Leaders can meet
those standards from a world famous guru on the West
Point Way of Leadership in China this May.
Larry Donnithorne, Who was the premier leadership
professor at West Point for 15 years and also the author
of “ The West Point Way of Leadership”, will led the
learning conference and share with attendees best
practices at West Point he discovered. |

[“The
West Point Way of Leadership”In
China]
Philosophy
VS Skill VS Character:There
is phenomenon of periodical development of leadership in
China, from Leadership philosophy development to
leadership skills development, and to leadership
character development. Now business leaders in China
have strong desires to develop “Character Based
Leadership” which is claimed and practiced at West
Point.
Indoor Learning VS leadership challenges:West
Point has turned out more leaders than Harvard Business
School and is widely recognized as the best Business
School in the world. Competent Business leaders working
in the complex and changing environment in China can’t
be made solely by business school study. They should be
challenged and disciplined as cadet at West Point do.
System
VS Application VS Tools:West
Point Leadership which is widely considered as
leadership principal with most impact on the business,
political and military world of United States because of
a book titled” The West Point Way of Leadership”. This
book is strongly recommended by the former
superintendent of West Point and attendees of the 2008”
West Point Way of Leadership” Learning Conference will
have an in-depth interaction with Larry
Donnithorne, author of this book.
[6
Reasons to Participate]
The “ Leadership Lessons From West Point” Forum held in
year 2007 not only witnessed the strong interest in and
highly appreciation of the West Point Way of leadership
by Chinese business leaders, but also offered us deep
understanding of the suggestions, feedback and
expectations from all the participants.
For the 2008“The
West Point Way OF Leadership” China Learning Conference,
We try to achieve improvements in the following 6 ways:
1.
Organization
:Learning
Conference VS Forum.Attendees of this learning
conference will be fully involved and greatly inspired.
They are expected to be pushed into re-thinking and
self-reflection.
2.
Speaker:Larry
was touted as a guru of West Point Way of Leadership not
only because of his strong education background (West
Point, Stanford and Harvard), but also due to his
military leadership experiences in Korea and Vietnam
War. Larry was the premier Leadership professor at West
Point for 15 years.
3.
Program:Larry’s
training program design for the 2008 West Point Way of
Leadership learning conference in China is based on our
survey done among the attendees last year. It is focused
on in-depth and systematic integration of processes,
tools and suggestions.
4.
Presentation:Larry
will deliver his program by multi-sense way of
presentation.: Speech, comments, video, cases,
exercises, sharing……
5.
Topics
:
Topics and modules of larry’s one-day program were
developed from our investigation in year 2007.
Participants will learn and experience something beyond
their knowledge base.
6.
Promotion:We

[Bio of Larry Donnithorne]
Dr.
Larry Donnithorne began his formal higher education at
the United States Military
Academy at West Point from
which he graduated in 1966. He later earned master's
degrees in economics and civil engineering from Stanford
University and his doctorate in education from Harvard
University.
Dr.
Donnithorne has served in varied executive roles ranging
from commanding a company of 150 soldiers in combat in
Vietnam and managing construction projects in Korea and
the US to serving as president of a college and then as
president of a university. In Vietnam, he was described
by the Brigade Commanding General as “one of the best
company commanders in Vietnam,” and his subsequent work
enjoyed similar commendations.
In
addition to his leadership roles, Dr. Donnithorne also
served for fifteen years on the staff and faculty of the
United States Military Academy at West Point teaching
ethics, economics, and leadership and assisting the
Superintendent with reforms of the institution’s
character development programs and leader development
programs.
In 1993,
Dr. Donnithorne retired from active Army service. He
then served for almost six years as president of the
College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, North
Carolina. He was then selected in 1998 as president of
Colorado Christian University in Denver, Colorado. He
served in that capacity for eight years, when the
University appointed him as President Emeritus and
Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Leadership.
Drawing
upon both his many years education and experience in
practicing and teaching leadership and ethics, Dr.
Donnithorne has worked with leaders of many
organizations on the interplay of sound ethics and the
practice of effective, results-oriented leadership.
Organizations with whom he has worked or provided
seminars or speeches include the following: Johnson &
Johnson, Inc., IBM Corporation, American Express
Financial Advisors, Coopers & Lybrand (now known as
PriceWaterhouseCoopers), State Farm Insurance, Federal
Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh, CB Commercial Real Estate
Group, FMI Corporation, Appalachia Educational
Laboratory, International Association of Chiefs of
Police, City of Spokane (Washington, USA), Future
Presidents Institute of North Carolina State University,
Carnegie Mellon University, United States Air Force
Academy, Valley Forge Military Academy.
Dr.
Donnithorne’s most notable publication is a book titled,
The West Point Way of Leadership: From Learning
Principled Leadership to Practicing It, which was
published in the US in 1994 by Random House and in the
People’s Republic of China by the China Social Sciences
Press in 2005. A review of this book in the Harvard
Business Review concluded that “the West Point model of
leadership is a fascinating and insightful one, one that
Donnithorne presents modestly, carefully, and
convincingly.... The philosophy that underlies it...is
based on moral principle, timeless values, and the
leader’s selfless commitment to others.”
Dr.
Donnithorne is passionate about assisting the leaders of
organizations of all types to achieve meaningful and
long-lasting results through leadership which is founded
upon high ethical values. He argues persuasively that
this is the leadership that builds great companies,
great communities, and great nations.
